Autism Consortium 2011 Symposium (FREE)


The Autism Consortium 2011 Symposium will take place on October 25, 2011 at the Joseph B. Martin Conference Center at Harvard Medical School.

Registration opens at 8:30 AM. From 8:30 - 9:30 AM there will be a Family Resource and Research Fair with information booths featuring local autism programs, as well as information on enrolling in the latest research studies.

The morning session begins at 9:30 AM with a welcome by Executive Director, Deirdre Phillips.

A plenary session on New Visions for Autism Treatment which will feature Christopher McDougle, MD, Head of the Lurie Family Autism Center at Massachusetts General Hospital; Jean Frazier, MD, Chair of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the University of Massachusetts Medical School and UMass Memorial Medical Center; and William Barbaresi, MD, Associate Chief of the Division of Developmental Medicine at Children's Hospital Boston.

A talk on Bridging Clinical Care and Clinical Research by Roula Choueiri, MD, a Neurodevelopmental Pediatrician at the Floating Hospital for Children at Tufts Medical Center will follow.

Next, Dennis Wall, PhD, Assistant Professor of Pathology and Director of the Computational Biology Initiative at Harvard Medical School will present on his work on Shortening the Behavioral Diagnosis of Autism Through Artificial Intelligence and Mobile Health Technologies.

Lunch will offer a poster session highlighting research in progress.

The afternoon will begin with an important and timely session on Relaying Research Findings to Families: Ethical and Legal Considerations by Pearl O'Rourke, MD, Director, Human Research Affairs at Partners Health Care System.

Following this, Mark Daly, PhD, Associate Professor at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, and an Associate Member of the Broad Institute will provide an update on Autism Genetics: New Advances and Future Considerations.

Next, Vijaya Ramesh, PhD, Associate Professor of Neurology, Harvard Medical School; Associate Neurologist, Massachusetts General Hospital will give a talk titled: Neuronal E3 Ubiquitin Ligase Pam in TSC/mTORC1 Signaling and Synapse Development.

After that Ann Greybiel, PhD, Walter A. Rosenblith Professor of Neuroscience, Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences; Investigator at the McGovern Institute, MIT will talk about her work on Repetitive Behaviors in Autism Spectrum and OC-Spectrum Disorders: The Basal Ganglia Link.

Finally, Nancy Kanwisher, PhD, Ellen Swallow Richards Professor in the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences, MIT will talk about her work on Cognitive Phenotype of Autism: Face Perception and Attention.

The day will end with a reception.

High school is a time when all students need to be actively involved in planning for their future. At this critical juncture, students and families must be informed, proactive, involved and hopeful. The process can be overwhelming for families because resources and information about Transition planning, Transition assessments and Transition services are often difficult to find.

"Planning a Life: Making the Most out of High School" is a two day conference packed with Transition planning information and resources for and about students in special education ages 14-22. Transition planning, needs to be on schedule to ensure a systematic, purposeful, and individualized educational experience.
Plan now to attend to find out about "what you need to know, when you need to ask, and who you need to go to for answers." Our goal is to establish a statewide network of proactive knowledgeable parents working in partnership with their local school districts to develop individualized Transition goals in the IEP.

This conference is open to everyone. Registration is free for families in Boston, Worcester and Springfield, through Transition Works! a grant in partnership with the Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission.

Research in Autism Spectrum Disorders: Implications for Intervention


This free daylong conference, to be held on November 18, 2011 at the Westin Hotel in Waltham, highlights current research at the Shriver Center by leading experts in autism spectrum disorders. It will include presentations on development and genetics; visual perception and visual attention; communication and auditory learning; food selectivity; and aspects of intervention for children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorders.

The conference is intended for parents, clinicians, researchers and school personnel, and is free to all attendees, but advanced registration is required and space is limited. We suggest you register early since space is limited.

This interactive workshop is perfect for parents and/or professionals who have previously attended the PECS Basic Training and want to address specific PECS implementation challenges and expand the use of PECS across a wide range of activities and settings. Pyramid's skilled instructor will lead group discussions and video analyses regarding practical and resourceful solutions, and innovative problem solving strategies for complex PECS implementation situations. The workshop will further provide practical ideas for advanced lessons in expanding the learners' language and communication within functional activities, and essential tools for identifying communication opportunities across the day. Participants will leave the training with innovative and creative ideas on how to successfully problem solve PECS implementation and how to take PECS to the next level.
