Mia

Hi, I’m Mia McDonald and I Live in Worcester and represent the families of the Worcester DDS AREA.

I have 5 children, Liam (2001), Helena (2005), Steve (2007), Fionn (2009) and Eamon (2001). My husband, Patrick, and I love living in Worcester and all of our school-aged children attend Gates Lane Elementary and Burncoat Middle/High School. I have been on the Family Advisory Board at the Center since 2010.

My oldest, Liam, was diagnosed with high functioning autism when he was 3. We were given dozens of doctors and agencies to contact for assistance at that time. The most important and beneficial call we made was to the Autism Resource Center. My family takes advantage of the varied programs offered by the Center. Before I was brave enough to try programs for my child, I got myself educated with parent classes at the Center. These programs gave me the information and confidence to advocate for Liam at school and in the specialists’ offices. We then ventured into sensory programs, pizza parties, vacation activities, and social skills groups. When they were younger, we loved to spend 2 weeks every summer just being a family having fun at camp, and all of my children enjoyed it. Now that Liam is older, we find new activities like Teen Social Group for his changing interests. My children over 7 attend the SibShop, where they find fun, information, support and comradery from other siblings going through the same thing.

You will find me at many Center events, and of course, at the annual walk. I encourage you to get involved in Center events and I’d love to meet you in person!

Sincerely,
Mia McDonald
Family Advisory Board Member since 2010
